Education has been universally acclaimed as an indispensable tool for socio-economic revolution and transformation which is achieved through empowerment of its beneficiaries with knowledge, skills, attitude and disposition to enable them effect personal and national development. At present the ability of the university education in Nigeria to perform the above function effectively appears to be in doubt. Sorting which is basically when an academically defiant student sorts himself out with the teacher or lecturer or the other persons in authority with a view of securing favors to wipe out that deficiency. Although mostly positive, this influence can be negative. Illiteracy among Nigerian Adults

I’ve been fixating mainly on the challenges faced by the youths in education that I haven’t considered the adults, so after a little stake out research I was able to gather some of the education related challenges facing adults. The Adults are no doubt the leaders of today but there seems to be one general challenge when it comes to adults and that is illiteracy.

    Illiteracy, simply defined as a situation where a person can’t read or write, well this is one of the factors greatly posing an adverse effect on the development of a country’s educational standards. According to 2009 data from UNESCO, statistics showed that over 34.8 million adults in Nigeria are illiterates thereby ranking the highest in sub-Saharan Africa.

The availability of infrastructure is one of the great aids to the growth in educational standards of a country, but the statistics has shown that 4 out of 5 schools are without the needed equipments to promote the quality of education in schools. The Federal Government claims to allocate a lot of fund towards the provision of infrastructures to schools yearly yet there hasn’t been any visible action taken to equip these schools especially the public which are mostly just empty buildings with no roofs or chairs, most of the students just play all day because since there aren't any thing to teach with who will bother to wasting time fighting a lost cause.

Though this group was seen as anti-western education since their armed insurgences in 2009 the group never attacked schools until recently, with each of their unabated attacks being even greater than the latter.

The Death of Students May Have Caused the Death of Education in a School

Will normalcy ever be an option in Nigeria, this is a question asked by many, and it was also a question I asked myself upon the discovery of this event which transpired in the eastern part of the country as the traditional practices of a community resulted in the death of two students of Federal Polytechnic Oko after being allegedly attacked by masquerades in their hostel outside the campus. The students in retaliation took siege of the community looting and destroying over millions of naira worth of valuables and properties.
The situation was even uncontainable by the police and other law enforcers who were drafted in as the students blocked all entrances into the town, setting bonfires on roads and chasing indigenes, traders, and non students who took refuge into the bushes.

Education vs. Employment in Nigeria

Most youths seek higher education for the purpose of securing both an impressive certificate and hopefully a satisfying white collar office job. But with the rate of unemployment in Nigeria it's almost impossible to secure a job even as a certified graduate.
This anomaly has left many educated youths jobless, despite the fact that most youths spend a lot of money in school fees just to become a better person in the society and in most cases provide his/her family a better standard of living, but due to unemployment, graduates seeks job opportunities in the oddest of places. What's In Stall For New Years After The Christmas Bombing?

Christmas which was supposed to be celebrated with jingles, carols and sharing of quality time with loved ones has taken a different turn due to terrorism. A militant Muslim group called 'BOKO HARAM' has taken it upon themselves to destroy any progress or development in Nigeria, for the past three years the rate of terrorism has grown rapidly and thousands of lives lost due to attacks and bombings by this Islamic group.
BOKO HARAM has sworn to make the activities and lives of Christians miserable, this emanated the series of bombings of churches on Christmas day, which caused an estimate of 250 casualties with over 150 dead and others seriously injured. It was reported that the bombs were set off during church service in over 3 different churches. Citizens all over Nigeria are in mourning over the loss of friends and loved ones, with these attacks it is now clear that all hopes of a joyful and peaceful Christmas celebration has been destroyed.

Students vs. Hiv & Aids

Diseases and health problems stands as one of the adverse factor that affects the education of Africa, it is well known that Africa is a breeding ground for all sought of diseases most of which are originated and others imported.
HIV & AIDS is the most feared disease that affects the youths, the percentage of the infected are rising by the day, most youths are even afraid of going in for testing because they are worried about the outcome. The battle against HIV & AIDS by the government has led to the creation of various organization groups to help tackle this problem.
As part of activities marking the worlds AIDS Day 2011 which is celebrated across the world on December 1 the Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) at the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) organized a seminar tagged World Aids Day - PTI intervention. The event which started with an interactive session with the participants on the ABC's of HIV & AIDS prevention in which 'A' stands for Abstinence, 'B' for Be faithful and 'C' for use of Condoms.

Protests of Students towards Education

It is no secret that teenagers are about the most rebellious group when it comes to authority, which has been proved to be right with recent riots and protests.
The latest of this protest which involved the students of the Anglican High School in Ekiti State over their failure of the Unified Mock Examination which will determine their passage from SS2 to SS3, students were reportedly angered by the announcement of their repeat of SS2 class, thereby seeing it as a demotion which they responded by going on a rampage protest thereby paralyzing commercial activities in the area for hours.

Devastating Effect of Strike on Education

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a strike which has been going on for the part 2 weeks, over the implementation and enforcement of the 2009 agreement between ASUU and the Government which took the union years of strike and continuous dialogue culminating in a national strike that lasted from june 22 to October 9 2009, before the government gave in and signed an agreement.
These agreement which are
*Better funding of of universities.
*Better remuneration and condition of service
*University autonomy
*Academic freedom
*Amendment of the law establishing the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)
*The extension of retirement age of professors from 65 to 70. Among others.
These agreements is believed will help improve the educational standards of universities, and also for the purpose of giving quality educations to the students.
The Government in response has granted most of these demands but excluding some which the ASUU still insists is the of most importance to them, which are the extension of retirement age from 65 to 70 and the reduction of school fees which was drastically increased from N25,000 to N350,000.
Currently both the federal and state universities are on strike, the students having lost so much time, due to these strikes, students are now protesting for the issue to be resolved especially the recent hike in the school fees, stating that they can barely afford the previous fees and also maintain a three day meal.

Nigeria Bans Gay and Lesbian Relationship

So many urgent and serious situations which has befell on Nigeria has been undoubtedly regarded as a minor problem as compared to the Gay and Lesbian sexual relationships.
This issue as it appears seems to be of more importance as it is believed that it is against the culture, tradition and value system of the nation. Therefore the diplomatic hysteria that heralded the passage of law outlawing gay marriage-cum relationships by the senate is unwarranted.
The senate unanimously voted on November 29 outlawing public displays of affection between gay and lesbian couples, and has even passed out a 14 year jail term for any person involved in same sex marriage and a 10 year jail term for persons who abets or aids such unions.

Nigerian President Battles Terrorism

The Northern parts of Nigeria are still in terror and chaos following the constant attacks by the notorious terrorist group by the name 'Boko Haram'. Following the last few attacks that occured in November which involved series of explosions in Bauchi State, and parts of Damaturu leaving an estimate of over 180 casualties, with 170 dead and the rest fatally injured, these has got the state dwellers terrified and fleeing for their lives.

Currently in West Africa, Nigeria has a rapid terrorist activities, over the past three years Nigeria has not been at rest since the advent of an islamic group called "BOKO HARAM", a notorious group that is opposed to any western tradition or ways such as Education, Culture and Science. This group which has grown much stronger over the years, has now resulted into the use of bombs and explosives as their strategy for creating tension and division in Nigeria.
Northern parts of Nigeria is in chaos with it's citizens in panic and fear of their lives due to the death of hundreds of innocent lives emanating from bombing of buildings and places. People are now now afraid to go to public areas such as markets, parks, social activities and churches. The fear which is caused by the fact that these are the recent targets of their attacks.
These terrorists has even vowed to humiliate the federal police for daring to give the group an ultimatum to stop it's activities, this that they proved by the recent bombing of the Nigerian police headquater in the Federal Capital Territory, leaving hundreds of people dead. These attacks has left the Northern States residents in fear and panic as to where and who will be their next attack.
The news are now filled with the horror and remains of these attacks. BOKO HARAM activities has even attracted the attention of The United States, with the President Barrak Obama making efforts to aid Nigeria into the resolve of this issue.
Due to these attacks Nigeria is now on the list of terrorist countries, this have even lead the US Embassy warning it's citizens about any impending visits to Nigeria due to it's rate of terrorism.
