Parents Effect on Career Choice of Teenagers

Career choice is what will determine the future of an individual, most teens even at childhood, already know what they want to do in when they grow up, but as one matures those dreams and aspirations keeps getting farther out of reach.
These aspirations are often triggered by ones talent and attraction to things, in West Africa due to the ever-increasing rate of unemployment the career choice of an adolescent is mostly influenced by this factor, which is also supported by parents.
Parents play a very important and delicate role into the career choice of a teenager.
When a child is ready to take a career path, the choice is always in favour of their parents decision, due to the fact that most parents have carefully examined and analyzed the key factors and situations, which includes the family's financial status, the money yielding prospects, the prestige attached to the jobs and most importantly the state of employment in the country. The aspiration of a child may not even affect the parents decisions, this emanating from the fact that their interest are mostly tilted to the path of money yielding prospect of the career which is why in most cases teens around the ages of 14-17 only have a specific career paths in mind like Medicine, Law and Engineering.
The work of a guidance counsellor at schools is to help guide and coach children in both moral standards and career choices which is done by the examination of both the Academic ability and talents of the child, which will help in determining the most suitable career for the child, they are also meant to educate and inform the child on their chosen career paths which are often set in motion when applying to college.
But many schools in Africa do not have guidance counsellors, thereby leaving the teenagers to make an important decision alone without proper guidance and advise, which is where the parents comes in, with only the wealth and financial prospect in mind they aim for the most successful career paths without the child's Academic capability in mind.
